  • How does weathering impact my sculpture?

Wooden outdoor sculptures undergo a fascinating journey of weathering and transformation, evolving in response to their environment over time. When exposed to the elements, such as sunlight, rain, wind, and fluctuations in temperature and humidity, wood gradually undergoes a series of changes that contribute to its unique character and appearance.

Initially, the surface of a wooden sculpture may exhibit signs of weathering, such as fading, cracking, or splitting. These alterations occur as the wood absorbs moisture from rain or snow, causing it to expand and contract. Over time, exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from sunlight may also lead to the bleaching of the wood's surface, resulting in changes in colour and texture.

As the weathering process continues, natural elements such as fungi, mold, and algae may colonise the surface of the wood, further adding to its patina and texture. Moss and lichen may also establish themselves on the sculpture, lending it a sense of age and organic integration with its surroundings.

While weathering can alter the appearance of a wooden outdoor sculpture, it also enhances its visual appeal and contributes to its narrative. Each weathering pattern tells a story of the sculpture's interaction with its environment, reflecting the passage of time and the dynamic relationship between art and nature. Ultimately, the weathering process imbues wooden outdoor sculptures with a sense of authenticity and resilience, enriching their aesthetic and cultural value.

  • How do I care for my Daltonwood sculpture?

One of the beautiful aspects of this type of art is that it is created from responsibly sourced, natural ‘green wood’. Green wood, as the name suggests, has not undergone drying processes, allowing it to naturally respond to environmental changes such as fluctuations in temperature and humidity. This natural reaction may result in changes, that add to the unique character and appearance. (See How Does Weathering Impact My Sculpture).

To ensure the longevity and beauty of your Daltonwood sculpture, each piece is meticulously finished with premium Cedar and Osmo oils that penetrate the wood’s surface and preserve from within.

Depending on the unique factors of your sculpture’s environment, we recommend periodically treating your sculpture with a generous application of oil to maintain its splendour, to protect from the elements and to preserve the integrity of your artwork for years to come.
