The Kelpie is inspired by the mythical water horse of Scottish folklore, traditionally associated with lochs and rivers.

Carved from a piece of locally sourced yew, I wanted the shape of the horse to flow into the timber, with the sweeping lines through the mane and body giving a sense of water and movement. Yew has some fantastic grain and natural markings, and rather than trying to hide these, I’ve worked with them and made them part of the finished sculpture.
